How Forgiveness Built a Legacy: The Amy Foundation’s 32-Year Journey from Tragedy to Transformation

Loading player...
In 1993, Fulbright scholar Amy Biehl was tragically killed in Guguletu a moment that could have defined South Africa’s divisions. Instead, it became a global symbol of forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope when her parents forgave her killers and partnered with them to launch a movement that’s since empowered 12,000+ young South Africans.

On this powerful episode, Sam Marshall sits down with Kevin Chaplin, Managing Director of the Amy Foundation, to explore how a story of profound loss became a blueprint for radical change and how two of the men involved in Amy’s death now lead the foundation’s work in communities they once harmed.

What You’ll Learn:

✔️ The Power of Forgiveness: How Amy’s parents met her killers—and chose reconciliation over retribution, inspiring a nation.
✔️ From Offenders to Leaders: The journey of Ntobeko Peni and Easy—now pillars of the foundation mentoring youth and leading centers.
✔️ Tangible Impact: How the foundation runs 6 after-school centers serving 1,400+ kids daily and a youth skills program placing 2,051+ graduates in jobs.
✔️ Why It Still Matters: With 50% of SA youth not finishing grade 12 and 100,000+ teen pregnancies annually, this work is critical.
✔️ How You Can Help: From buying Blue Ribbon bread (whose August proceeds support the foundation) to volunteering or donating even R100/month changes lives.

Kevin’s Challenge:
“We need more South African volunteers. Give one hour a month to mentor a young person. That’s how we build futures.”

Tune in and be part of a legacy that turns pain into purpose.
