Behind the Lens: Celebrating South Africa’s First DGSA Creative Awards

Loading player...
For the first time ever, the Directors Guild of South Africa (DGSA) is shining a spotlight on the visionaries behind the camera. The DGSA Creative Awards, hosted in Cape Town this November, mark a historic celebration of artistry, leadership, and storytelling in South African film and television.

In this episode of The Social Impact Show, Sam Marshall speaks with Andile Sinqoto, Executive Director of DGSA, about why now is the moment to honor directors not just for their aesthetics, but for their role in shaping culture, building safer sets, creating jobs, and mentoring the next generation of filmmakers.

With global partners like Canon, Stage 32, and the New York Film Academy, these awards go beyond trophies. They’re a launchpad for South African directors to gain international recognition, foster collaboration, and showcase the country’s creative strength on the world stage.

Andile’s Vision:
“We don’t want to just be at the table we want to lead the conversation. Directors are the industry. Supporting them means investing in South Africa’s cultural future.”
