A Business Day headline foghorned this week that ANC strife is a risk for SA security - Panel’.
The panel was tasked with undertaking a critical review of the government’s preparedness and shortcomings regarding the civil unrest and violence of July 2021.
The wounds from last year, the substantial human, economic and business losses sustained at the time, are still fresh.
In a wide-ranging frank report released by President Ramaphosa earlier this week the panel offered incisive criticism of the roles played by ANC factionalism, as well as the complete lack of preparedness and obvious bureaucratic incompetence, in addressing the emerging problems of violence and rioting last year.
The Panel also emphasized that, whatever remedies are now implemented to beef up the intelligence and security services, an environment of unemployment, poverty and inequality remains a tinder box for further violent instability.
That is the harsh reality facing the president as he prepares to set the table for the government’s agenda this year, for his sixth State of the Nation Address.
Let’s welcome our panel to find out what they expect to hear and what they would like hear ahead of the key address:
Bonang Mohale is the President of Business Unity South Africa (BUSA)
Investec Chief Economist Annabel Bishop,
Matthew Parks, Deputy Parliamentary Coordinator at COSATU
Izak Odendaal, Investment Strategist, Old Mutual Multi-Managers
