In commemoration of Nelson Mandela Day 2025, the Gauteng
Department of Health (GDoH) has initiated its third edition of
Surgical Marathons, with the goal of performing over 1,000 critical
procedures across public hospitals in the province. These
life-improving surgeries include cataract removals, cleft palate
repairs, prostate and urology operations, colostomy reversals,
breast cancer treatments, and a variety of general surgical
procedures. The campaign, supported by private sector
collaboration, highlights the department’s commitment to
equitable healthcare access. MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko is
leading oversight visits to hospitals, reopening the upgraded
Urology Unit at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital and the
Breast Centre for Excellence at Helen Joseph Hospital.
Additionally, she will launch the Treatment Time Guarantee (TTG)
Framework, which sets standardized, time-based expectations for
surgical procedures, tackling long-standing backlogs and delays
in treatment.
