Tshwane to pay over R1bn in back pay to workers

The City of Tshwane has agreed to pay more than R1 billion in backdated salaries after years of legal wrangling with trade unions. The dispute stems from a 3.5% wage increase the municipality failed to implement in 2022, citing financial strain. Mayor Nasiphi Moya says the payout will be spread over three years, starting with the lowest-paid workers, and insists the settlement won’t destabilise the city’s finances. But critics, including former Finance MMC Jacqui Uys, argue Tshwane still can’t afford it. Phemelo gets clarity from Deputy Mayor Eugene Modise.
