Reflux of gastric juices from stomach into esophagus occasional occurs in normal human beings. When this reflux increases in frequency and volume causing troublesome symptoms and/or damage to esophageal mucosa it is then regarded as pathological and called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
