A graceful queen who does it all on her tippy toes: Kitty Phetla

Growing up as a young girl in Soweto and then Alexandra township, she had big dreams! Like most South African young children, she loved to dance…but her choice of dance left many in her neighbourhood and family puzzleToday Stacey and JSbu spoke to Miss Kitty Phetla from KZN, this amazing woman has performed at the highest stages in the world in classical ballet.

Kitty Phetla is a senior soloist with Joburg Ballet. She still wonders at how it all happened for her and how she came so far and actually making her dreams come true, not only on a local platform but also internationally.

She was born to a family in Soweto,1983, A self-proclaimed tomboy, Phetla mimicked her brothers’ every move. When offered the choice of karate or ballet as an extramural activity at a friend's extramural activity at school, she opted for the latter to challenge herself. Tall and firm in build, Phetla did not match the typical profile for a dancer. .
