‘SA’s responsibility to its youth is more than creating employment opportunities’ – YPI

The Youth Progress Index (YPI) by IQbusiness in partnership with global non-profit organization, the Social Progress Imperative, aims to move beyond thinking that the creation of employment and/or business opportunities is the fulfillment of the country’s responsibility to young people. This is according to Shaneel Bachoo from IQbusiness who was on the OFM Business Hour speaking on the outcomes of the latest YPI. The index is a quality of life metric that gives an objective indication of the real outcomes of South Africa’s youth. There are three dimensions to the index they are: basic human needs, foundations of wellbeing and opportunity dimension. Bachoo says SA’s overall opportunity dimension between 2015 and 2021 has declined owing to the regression of the youth’s “personal rights”. In fact he says this is a trend seen globally characterized by a lack of trust in police and the courts.
