AA wants to know why petrol price announcement was delayed

The Automobile Association (AA) will approach parliament to find out why the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s announcement on record high petrol prices was kept to the last minute on Election Day. On Wednesday already financially strained South Africans started paying R 1, 21 a litre for petrol, R 1, 48 a litre for diesel and R 1, 45 a litre in paraffin. The announcement was reportedly made by the aforementioned department late on Monday evening as many citizens approached the final hour of voting on Election Day. The AA is of the view that the release was delayed to protect the “incumbent government” from any backlash. According to the AA the statement from DMRE was slated for release on 28 October but was only issued on 1 November. Spokesperson for the AA, Layton Beard got into the impact of the fuel price on burdened South Africans on the OFM Business Hour.
